Canon Michael's reflection for the Monday of Holy Week
The scene in today's Gospel takes us once again into the home of Martha, Mary and Lazarus in Bethany. How Jesus must have loved visiting his friends. You can tell from the Scripture, Jesus was so much at ease in this house.
Today Jesus is anointed prior to his burial. Of course it wasn't meant to be that, it was a simple, generous act of love by Mary his friend. We see a hidden significance in this anointing. Strange to say Judas thought it was an awful thing to do, a complete waste of money. Being mean spirited is not a good thing. Poor Judas, he could have been a great saint.
I especially like the first reading from Isaiah. Of all the prophets in the Old Testament he is the one who was given special knowledge of The Christ. Today he speaks of the gentleness of our Saviour who will not break the crushed reed or put out the wavering flame. Marvellous. Here is a saviour who knows our weaknesses, who feels our brokenness and he does not condemn.
Thank you Lord.
