Fr Richard's words for today
Our Father
Jesus raises His eyes to heaven in prayer to the Father in
today’s Gospel. How often do we pray earnestly to our Loving and Eternal Father?
To what extent are we conscious of addressing our praise and supplications to God
the Father in particular?
These are good questions to ask. It’s so easy to rattle off
spoken prayers without fully concentrating on which Person of the Blessed Trinity
we’re addressing. Notice how the Intercessions at Mass are always addressed to
the Father. The heart and summit of the Mass is the Eucharistic Prayer – a great
prayer of praise and thanksgiving to the Father for the gift of His Son, Jesus
Christ. The saints tell us there is so much to meditate upon in the first two
words of the Lord’s prayer that we could spend quite a long time in silence before
moving to the next stanza.
The realisation that God is our Father: that He loves us,
cares for us and wants us to share in the life of the Trinity – this should
bring us deep joy. Christ is the Mediator between God and man. By His
Incarnation, Passion, Death and Resurrection, He has brought us into unity with
our Almighty and Merciful Father.
As we approach the birthday of the Church at Pentecost, let
us ask the Holy Spirit to bring us ever closer to the Father, that we may see
His glory.
