Holy Wednesday

Canon Michael's reflection for Spy Wednesday

In some ways this is the last day of Lent as we prepare to enter into the Sacred Triduum of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. This day is called Spy Wednesday as Judas was looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus.

The readings tell us that Jesus knew he was going to be betrayed by one of his closest friends. He knew too that Peter would deny him. Some of the hardest words Jesus ever spoke are in today's Gospel when he says of the one who was to betray him, "Better if that man had never been born". Could Jesus say that of someone who was to enjoy the light and happiness of heaven? These are hard words and remind us of the power of free will and the possibility of all of us to choose or to reject the immense love and mercy of God. Though we are weak like Peter may we like him choose Life.
